My guide arrived in New Zealand this morning. I’m a home sick Pom who’s spent years living in north Wales and I’m proud to say I’ve done most of the routes covered in this guide. To be frank this guide book is quite simply magnificent. Firstly the pictures are incredible. They sooth the soul of a boy who miss spent most of his youth In these hills and misses them with a longing that’s sharpened by distance and time. The route information is superb. Clearly written by people who know the routes and understand the mind of someone looking to push them selves in this environment. Amphitheatre buttress is described for the grade three scrambler wearing boots and gives information on surrounding routes with them in mind. The start of the book has a wealth of information that would do aspirant mountain leaders a world of good. A piece of constructive feedback would refer to a welsh canyon descent being described and the intonation that 2 dynamic ropes would be appropriate for a ca n descent. As an experienced Canyoneer I would suggest alternative equipment and techniques to descend a canyon and regret that this is not addressed in the guide.
If you love welsh hills and want to explore them more buy this book. Though try not to flock to the quite right areas outlined as the splendid isolation and emptiness of them are what make them special.

This is a wonderful book! Although I have a few scrambling / walking guides for Snowdonia, I’ve always wanted one that combined a mixture of the best within each area. Adopting the approach of the climbing books works really well. I love that there’s a combination of walks / scrambles / climbs, providing lots of useful info for link ups and mountaineering days.
