The largest ever Rockfax crown was briefly held by the
recent Peak Bouldering book, but this has been handed over
now to this new massive tome. Working on this for the past
two years has been a real pleasure; visiting old favourite
venues as well as a few that had fallen off the radar a bit
over the years. I have been accompanied by many of the
usual suspects, in particular Graham and Dan Parkes, Steve
Cunnington, Dave Gregory, Colin Binks, Dave Clay, Martin
Veale and Brian Rossiter. There were a few mutterings when
I kept suggesting venues like Turningstone Edge and Shining
Cliff instead of the usual Froggatt/Stanage/Bamford circuit
but, in the event, we had some great days on some out-of-
the-way crags.
The combined skills of the Rockfax/UKC team have made
the production of the book a breeze - Alan James has bought
his layout skills and eagle eye to bear with stunning results.
Also Stephen (FB) Horne has come up with some superb
scripts that have automated many of the more onerous tasks
associated with writing guidebooks.
As ever Sherri Davy has been my rock; helping and
supporting me at every stage of the production, from the
early days tramping about in the fog checking stuff all the
way through adding the finishing touches - a huge thank you
is in order.
Chris Craggs, March 2015
We owe a huge debt of thanks to all those who have
contributed to the documentation of climbing on the Eastern
Edges over the years. Whether this be through work on older
guidebooks, or diligent crag moderators on UKClimbing, your
efforts are very much appreciated.
For this book we have once again worked with a number of
superb photographers. Thanks go to Mike Hutton and Adam
Long especially for their many fine contributions. We are also
grateful to David Bond, Chris Fox, Graham Parkes, Guy Van
Greuning, Jamie Moss, Dan Arkle, Jonathon Percival, Franco
Cookson, Calum Muskett, Owen Hughes, Michael Watson
and Rob Greenwood for their photographs.
Thanks also to Mark Rankine, Pete Whittaker, Paul Phillips
(497 ticks on the Eastern Grit Top 500) and Rob Greenwood.
I would like to make a special mention for our two excellent
proof readers. Jaimella Espley and Rebecca Ting have done
an amazing job and continue to be great people to work with.
Once again Chris Craggs has come through with the goods,
14 years on since our first collaboration. I am very grateful
to both Chris and Sherri for their excellent work making this
third edition of Eastern Grit the biggest and best ever.
Alan James, March 2015
We are grateful to the following for
their support of this guidebook.
