The figure-of-8 is
occasionally used as
a belay device but
is better suited to
abseiling.

This device has a mechanical locking
system, but is better used once you
have got the hang of using a standard
belay device.
Standard
Standard belay devices come in a few
different shapes and sizes but they all do
the same job. The device on the right above
has teeth which create friction and slow
down the rope. This is great for beginners.
