If it looks like this
you have put the
rope in the wrong
way around, so
start again.
Pinch the rope together like so, creating
a ‘live’ end and a ‘dead’ end.
Squeeze the pinched
rope through one of the
holes in the belay device.

is shown in red. It hangs
down to the ground and
is the part of the rope
that stops the climber
from falling and hitting
the ground.

The live end of the rope
shown in green is the end
the climber is attached to.
