PORT DE SÓLLER

There are two distinct DWS areas at Port de Sóller in addition to the sport climbing crag (page 152). The Bay Area has many lines which would suit first time soloers and those seeking a lower-grade experience. The entire crag is undercut, and in most places the sea floor is well below you, and therefore very safe for splashdowns. Slightly further north up the coast from the sport climbing crag is the mysterious and isolated Cova de ses Puntes. First discovered by local climbers Miquel Riera and Toni Josep, the steep and curved cave-like wall offers only seven lines which top out around 12m above the sea. There is still plenty of potential for other lines in the vicinity, but one would most probably describe this venue as a connoisseur's crag.
The crag at Port de Sóller is set in a beautiful location looking out over the sea and harbour entrance, all framed by the backdrop of the Tramuntata mountains. The main feature of the crag is the huge central cave, which has some excellent testpieces for those operating in the higher grades. The walls to either side offer much more friendly-angled climbing, with some excellent mid-grade routes. More routes have been added on the left-hand side of the cliff and there are reports of more development further to the left again that might be worth a look for those who have climbed out the main area.
