SALEM

Despite the vaguely slightly sinister association Salem is a friendly crag with loads of accessible and well-bolted climbing. The various walls offer both sun and shaded routes as you require them. The rock is generally good with smooth flowing limestone, covered in small solution pockets, on the right-hand side, and more broken and cracked walls on the left-hand side. As with most recently bolted crags, the gear and lower-offs are all solid and well-positioned .... lots of them ... all over the place ... in fact far too many, and this actually detracts from one or two sectors. Many visitors here make the mistake of just climbing on the two sectors near the parking - Frigorific and Estival. Both these offer some good routes, especially in the easier grades, however you will get much more from the crag if you venture up onto the higher side walls and explore the place a bit. Bolts have a habit of disappearing on the easier routes by on Sectors Frigorific and Estival. Some people may find a small rack of wires useful just in case.
